UCF Athletics announced Tuesday night that baseball coach Terry Rooney would not be returning to coach the Knights next season. After compiling an overall record of 261-209 over the course of eight seasons, Rooney will be leaving to pursue another coaching opportunity.
According to national baseball writer Kendall Rogers, Rooney will be joining the Southeastern Conference as an assistant coach at Alabama.
"We wish Terry and his family the best of luck," Athletics Director Danny White said in a release. "During his tenure at UCF, coach Rooney showed a great deal of passion for his players and the program. We thank him for his efforts over the past eight years. Terry and his teams have laid a great foundation to continue building on in the future."
In the time he spent at UCF, Rooney led the Knights to NCAA postseason play in 2011 and 2012. He was also named the 2014 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Hitting coach Ryan Klosterman has been named the interim head coach, and White said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
White has had to fill numerous coaching vacancies in his short time at UCF, most notably his hire of Scott Frost as head football coach. He also fired both the men's basketball coach Donnie Jones and women's basketball coach Joi Williams and replaced them with Johnny Dawkins and Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, respectively.
White's most recent hires have been in an effort to upgrade the men's and women's tennis program in anticipation for the opening of the new collegiate tennis center at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona early next year. John Roddick, the brother of former tennis star Andy Roddick, was hired as the new director of tennis and will also serve as men's tennis head coach.
Just as all of the coaching vacancies had been closed on Tuesday when UCF announced the hiring of Bryan Koniecko as the new women's tennis head coach, the search will begin again for the next addition to the Knights head coaching family.
