UCF signs off on Sigma Pi's 1st boozie charity event
If you think you know the atmosphere at The Knight's Pub, think again.
UCF's Sigma Pi Fraternity will host its first Sigma Pig Roast at The Knight's Pub on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to raise money for its philanthropy.
The event will consist of barbecue provided by Knight's Grub, a country concert for live entertainment — featuring Jonathan Honeycutt, DJ Flo and Jared Ashley — and happy hour.
The Knight's Pub will be closed and blocked off for this event only.
Through personal connections, the fraternity was able to establish what they hope to be a successful event.
The event is not an official UCF philanthropy, however, but Fraternity and Sorority Life has met with Sigma Pi to review the organization's risk management plan for the "wet" event, which has been signed off on, said UCF spokeswoman Courtney Gilmartin.
Manglardi said that no other organization has attempted an event of this scale at UCF before. Due to the presence of alcohol, the fraternity is going through extensive planning to make sure the event is the most fun, and safe, it can possibly be.
Joey Manglardi, the chairman for the event, said the fraternity hopes to combine the best fundraising elements from various Greek organizations, and put a Sigma Pi twist on them.
"My brothers and I initially thought of Sigma Pig Roast one day while joking around about our 'ideal' fundraiser," said Manglardi, a senior business management major. "Many of my brothers thought the initial idea of Sigma Pig Roast was far-fetched; however, a small group of us realized its potential."
Chris Lamb, a past president of Sigma Pi, is currently a manager at The Knight's Pub, and is also one of the founders of Knight's Grub. The other founder is another Sigma Pi brother, Luke Sarris.
"The money raised at this event will be donated to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation to support research and educational programs in marine conservation," as stated on the event's Facebook page.
A Sigma Pi brother is the Guy Harvey campus representative at UCF, and Manglardi said his brother's passion for the organization has flowed over to the rest of the fraternity.
There will be various give-away items at the event, including Guy Harvey, Yeti and Costa Del Mar items, such as shirts, hats, koozies and stickers.
According to the event's Facebook page, one lucky woman can win an exclusive pair of Guy Harvey Dorado Print yoga pants and a sports bra.
